Augustin Hirschvogel trained as a glass painter in Nuremberg under his father, the city's official stained glass painter. Lavish stained glass commissions ended when Nuremberg accepted the Protestant Reformation in 1525, and he later began making maps. He moved to Vienna in 1544 and made the first views of the city drawn to scale. His circular plan of Vienna was the first ever produced by triangulation, a surveying system he developed. He took up etching late, and almost all of his roughly 300 prints come from his last decade in Vienna, where he died in 1553.
