Asher Brown Durand started out as an engraver's apprentice and made his name engraving Declaration of Independence for John Trumbull. Around 1830 his patron Luman Reed encouraged him to move from engraving to oil painting. In 1837 he went sketching with his friend Thomas Cole at Schroon Lake in the Adirondacks, and soon after he turned to landscape. He spent summers drawing in the Catskills, the Adirondacks and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. His best-known painting, Kindred Spirits, shows Cole and the poet William Cullen Bryant in a Catskills landscape. Browse 132 works by Asher Brown Durand from 24 museums, free to download in HD.
