Ary Scheffer

Ary Scheffer moved to Paris with his mother in 1811 and studied under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin. The Dordrecht-born painter often took his subjects from Dante and Goethe, and he also turned to religious scenes. He finished 500 portraits, among them Chopin and Charles Dickens. Teaching drawing to Louis-Philippe's children brought him many commissions, but the June Days Uprising of 1848 shocked him into leaving politics. He then shut himself in his studio, and many of those paintings were only shown after his death in 1858. Browse 117 works by Ary Scheffer from 25 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
