Arnold W. Brunner argued that "synagogues have no traditional lines of architectural expression," so his Temple Israel on Lenox Avenue looks like a Roman temple. He was born in New York City in 1857 and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under William R. Ware. With Thomas Tryon he designed Congregation Shearith Israel on Central Park West for the oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. He also worked as a city planner and helped draw up the Group Plan for Cleveland in 1903. His bascule bridge over the Maumee River in Toledo is still in use as the Martin Luther King Bridge.
