Isle of the Dead is the picture Arnold Böcklin is best known for, and he painted five versions of it. It partly recalls the English Cemetery in Florence, near his studio, where his baby daughter Maria was buried. Böcklin was born in Basel in 1827 and studied at the Düsseldorf academy under Schirmer. He went to Rome in 1850, and mythological and allegorical figures came into his work there. His reputation fell quickly after his death in 1901, but Giorgio de Chirico said "Each of Böcklin's works is a shock." Browse 117 works by Arnold Böcklin from 39 museums, free to download in HD.
