Born and trained in Florence, Antonio Tempesta worked in Giorgio Vasari's large team decorating the Palazzo Vecchio. His favourite subjects were battles, cavalcades and processions. He later moved to Rome and spent time with artists from the Habsburg Netherlands, which may have shaped his skill with landscape. He painted frescoes in the Vatican Palace, the Villa Farnese at Caprarola and Roman palaces such as the Palazzo Colonna. Today he is best known as a printmaker. His prints include a set of 150 from Ovid's Metamorphoses and a series of 36 plates he engraved in 1612 after designs by Otto van Veen.
