A day on the beach with Oscar Wilde in 1882 pushed Alice Pike Barney to take art seriously, though her husband disapproved. She studied painting in Paris with Carolus-Duran and was one of the first students at Whistler's Académie Carmen in 1898. Her Paris salon drew Symbolist painters, and her own work began to show their influence. In Washington, D.C., she worked to make the city a center of the arts. Many of her paintings are now in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Browse 246 works by Alice Pike Barney from one museum, free to download in HD.
