In 1879 Edelfelt had his first success at the Paris Salon with a history painting, but he noticed that historical figures didn't fit a realistic outdoor setting. So he almost entirely gave up history painting and worked in the open air. Born in Porvoo, Finland, he spent his summers painting the Finnish countryside and set up a studio at Haikko in 1883. His portrait of Louis Pasteur in his laboratory was a great success at the Salon of 1886. Portraits were his main income, and he once wrote "Portraits for the soup, paintings for the glory."
