Akseli Gallen-Kallela
214 works
On his honeymoon in 1890, Gallen-Kallela travelled to East Karelia to collect material for his Kalevala pictures.
He had started out in Paris as a realist painter influenced by Jules Bastien-Lepage. His daughter Impi Marjatta died of diphtheria in 1895, and after that his work became more aggressive. In the next few years he painted The Defense of the Sampo and Lemminkäinen's Mother, which are among the Kalevala scenes he's best known for. He was born in Pori and died of pneumonia in Stockholm in 1931. Browse 214 works by Akseli Gallen-Kallela from 4 museums, free to download in HD. Source: Wikipedia
