The son of a tailor in Bologna, Agostino Carracci first trained as a goldsmith. In Venice he learned engraving under Cornelis Cort, and from 1574 he copied works by Tintoretto, Veronese and Correggio in print. With his brother Annibale and his cousin Ludovico he founded a teaching academy in Bologna and painted frescoes in Palazzo Fava and Palazzo Magnani. In 1598 he joined Annibale in Rome to work on the gallery in Palazzo Farnese. Duke Ranuccio I Farnese called him to Parma in 1600, but he died before the decoration of the Palazzo del Giardino was finished.
