Adolph Menzel studied only briefly at the Berlin Academy of Art and taught himself after that. He was born in Breslau in 1815 and later moved to Berlin with his family. When his father died in 1832, Menzel had to take over the family's lithographic business. His fame came from his illustrations of the Prussian king Frederick the Great, and he spent most of his life in Berlin. He was knighted in 1898 and changed his name to Adolph von Menzel.
