Abraham Bosse's father was a tailor in Tours, and Bosse drew clothes in loving detail all his life. He trained in Paris under the engraver Melchior Tavernier and later followed Jacques Callot. Roughly 1600 etchings are attributed to him, most of them book illustrations. In 1645 he published a treatise on Callot's etching methods, the first of its kind to be printed. His promotion of Girard Desargues's perspective methods drew him into a controversy with Charles Le Brun, and in 1661 he was forced to leave the Academy.
