About this work
Two barefoot peasant women rest in an open field as a pale pink sun sinks toward the horizon. A standing woman in a white headscarf stretches her arms while a seated companion tends a small fire, and a reclining figure lies on the ground beside them. Haystacks line the distant field under a warm, hazy evening sky. Jules Breton's "Le Soir" dates from 1880 and is held by the Arnot Art Museum.
