About this work

A wide landscape shows a royal procession approaching a large French Renaissance-style château across an open grassy plain, framed by dark trees on both sides. A gilded carriage drawn by white horses leads a column of mounted riders toward the palace, while a group of courtiers in the foreground gestures toward the scene. This painting, Arrivée de Louis XIV à Chambord, was made by Adam Frans van der Meulen in 1670 and is held by the Château de Chambord.
