About this work

This oil portrait shows a man in a long curled wig and a blue coat with gold braided fastenings, a red drape over his lap and a white cravat at his neck. He rests one hand on a terrestrial globe and holds dividers, with a sailing ship on the sea behind him. The painting is catalogued as William Wright, 1656-1735, by Michael Dahl, dated 1705, and an inscription in the lower right identifies the sitter as a Commissioner of His Majesty's Navy and father of Elizabeth Morrice.
