About this work

An oil sketch shows winged figures with dark wings at the left, with magpies flying above them in a stormy sky. On the right, draped female figures in white and yellow gowns gesture toward the birds while a group of onlookers watches, and an open book, a lyre and a scroll lie on the grass. This painting, titled Pierides changed into magpies, was made by Jean-Pierre Norblin de La Gourdaine in 1774 and is held by the National Museum in Warsaw.
