About this work

The painting shows a tumultuous assassination scene in a classical Roman interior, with togaed conspirators raising daggers around a central figure who is being attacked. A marble statue of a nude male figure stands on a pedestal at the left, and sculpted niches line the back wall beside seated observers. This is Vincenzo Camuccini's The Assassination of Julius Caesar, dated 1804, in the collection of the Museo di Capodimonte.
