About this work

Pietà by Masolino da Panicale, dated 1424, shows the dead Christ rising from a stone tomb while the grieving Virgin supports his shoulder and a younger mourner in a red mantle holds his hand. A cross bearing the INRI inscription stands behind, with nails and a crown of thorns hanging at the sides, and the gabled top features a bust of Christ and two circular roundels with figures beneath a decorative vine frieze.
