About this work
A seated woman in a white headscarf and red bodice reads a letter or book while a standing young man, dressed in a rust-colored coat, holds out a folded note toward her. A carved stone urn with a red rose stands on a pedestal table beside them, set within an arched interior opening onto a landscape. This is Gabriel Metsu's A Girl Receiving a Letter, painted in 1658 and held by the Timken Museum of Art.
