About this work
Lawrence Alma-Tadema's 1862 painting Venantius Fortunatus recites his verses to Radagonda VI and the abbess in the monastery of Poitier shows a reclining robed man gesturing mid-speech while two veiled women listen seated on either side. The richly detailed interior features red striped hangings, a checkered tiled floor, brass candlesticks and a fruit bowl, with a garden and red-roofed building visible through an open arch. The painting is held by the Dordrechts Museum.
