About this work
The Calling of St. Matthew, painted in 1530 by Marinus van Reymerswaele, shows a seated man in a green velvet and fur-trimmed robe gesturing toward a younger figure in a red cloak who glances upward. A cluttered shelf of books and boxes fills the background, and an open ledger, rolled papers and coins lie on the desk. A small street scene with figures appears through the left edge.
