About this work

A richly framed painting shows an armored commander standing on a raised platform before blue drapery, while kneeling figures in dark robes and a richly dressed man submit before him. Armed guards with shields and halberds fill the classical colonnaded hall, and a white dog and a child carrying a tray stand at the center. The border is decorated with birds, musical instruments, armor, putti, and flowers. The work is by Jan van Kessel the Elder and dated 1663.
