About this work

A street scene beneath a large brick arch shows vendors and shoppers gathered at a stone counter piled with fish, while ducks, a cat, and a dog move across the cobblestones. Posters for theatres and restaurants are pasted on the walls, and laundry hangs across the street beyond the arch. This Roman Fish Market, Arch of Octavius, painted by Albert Bierstadt in 1858, is held by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
