About this work

A crowded street scene shows a man in a black cloak and a figure in a red clerical robe riding a pale horse through a muddy lane lined with armed guards and spectators. Timber-framed houses with leaded windows frame the scene, and a jester in yellow and red gestures on the right while onlookers lean from balconies and doorways. The painting is by Carl Gustaf Hellqvist, dated 1879, and is held by the Nationalmuseum.
