About this work
A young boy with reddish hair and flushed cheeks stands before a dark background, holding a cigar in one raised hand while balancing a wicker basket filled with leafy green cabbage against his hip. He wears a loose white shirt under a blue apron, and his direct gaze gives the figure a candid, confrontational presence. Frank Duveneck painted this work in 1877, and it is held by the Taft Museum of Art.
