About this work
An Arcadian Landscape by John Martin, dated 1810, is an oil painting in the collection of the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. It shows a craggy cliff at left, a waterfall spilling into a dark pool, and a hazy valley stretching toward distant mountains. Figures are placed in the foreground: a standing woman with a small dog and two seated figures on a wooden platform beneath a large tree.
