About this work

This 1826 painting by Alexander Nasmyth offers a broad prospect of London as seen across the Thames from a garden terrace beside a red-brick townhouse. Sailing barges and rowing boats crowd the river, and a many-arched bridge crosses toward the city, with a dome visible in the distance. Small figures on the terrace, including a woman with a dog, look out over the scene.
