About this work

A three-masted sailing ship is shown heeling under billowing sails in a stormy sea, its lit gun ports and rigging crowded with figures. A puff of smoke drifts from a cannon near the bow, and the dark clouds and churning water frame the vessel. Painted by Eugène Isabey in 1836, the work is held by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts under the title The Burial at Sea of a Marine Officer Serving under Louis XVI.
