About this work

This painting depicts a crowd of winged fairies gathered in a dim woodland clearing, with a luminous female figure in a pale gown and a male figure in a red cloak and blue plumed helmet at the center. Owls and additional fairies fill the upper branches and the surrounding grass. Joseph Noel Paton made this study in 1849, and it is held by the Royal Scottish Academy.
