A dark interior shows a bare-chested man sprawled on a bed or couch, his side bleeding onto a white cloth, while onlookers in red, green, and gray garments recoil or reach toward him. A sword lies on the floor beside a fallen tablet, and sculpted reliefs and a bronze vessel decorate the wall. Pierre-Narcisse Guérin painted this work in 1797, and it is held by the Beaux-Arts de Paris.
