About this work

A nude young man with reddish hair raises a large sword in one hand and rests its hilt on his shoulder, standing over the severed head of a giant. Behind him, trumpeters and armed followers gather on the rocky terrain, while a crowned rider on a white horse and a walled city on a distant hill complete the scene. This is Jules-Élie Delaunay's painting David Triomphant, dated 1874, held by the Nantes Museum of Arts.
