About this work
A still life of fish, shellfish and oysters lies in the foreground of a coastal scene with sailing boats on the water and figures on the sand. A church spire and a brick tower rise above the dunes at the right, under a cloudy sky. This painting by Jan van Kessel the Elder, dated 1660, is in the Weldon Collection and is titled as a possible allegory of the element of water.
