About this work

A hanging scroll painting shows a school of fish and marine creatures drifting across a muted green-grey ground, including a large red sea bream, a black-and-white pufferfish, a stingray, a squid, and a shark. Thin strokes of seaweed and gentle wave lines suggest the underwater setting. The work is attributed to Itō Jakuchū and dated 1750, and is held by the Museum of the Imperial Collections.
