About this work

A seated woman in a white dress leans on a wooden chair in a sunlit garden while a young boy in a white shirt sits cross-legged on the ground beside an open book. The dappled, pointillist brushwork renders the foliage and golden light around the figures. Julio Romero de Torres painted this work, titled Aprendiendo a leer, in 1905.
