About this work

Jakub Schikaneder's 1909 painting "By the Girl's Bed" shows a dimly lit interior where a lit candle on a table glows warmly against the dark. A young girl lies in bed at left, while an older woman in a headscarf stands in profile at right beside a pale curtain and window. The soft, low-key handling of light and shadow gives the room a quiet, intimate mood.
