About this work
A painted coastal scene shows riders on horseback and figures on foot crossing a sandy shore beside breaking surf under a heavy, dark storm cloud. Tufts of grass grow across the dunes on the right, and a distant headland recedes into hazy light. This painting, titled Coast near Villers, is by Constant Troyon and dates to 1859, held by the Walters Art Museum.
