About this work
A watercolor study shows a dense cluster of dark purple-black grapes hanging from a brown woody stem, rendered with soft highlights and shading on a cream paper ground. The handwritten label on the sheet identifies the variety as Syrah de la Hermitage, from a Oakville, Napa County, California vineyard, dated 1907. The work is attributed to Ellen Isham Schutt and forms part of the USDA Pomological Watercolor Collection.
