About this work
This watercolor drawing by Arnold Houbraken, held by the Städel Museum, shows the winged messenger Mercury pointing toward a small temple on a steep hill while holding his caduceus. Seated and standing allegorical women, one holding a musical score, watch him beside a classical statue, and a reclining bearded figure with a cupid appear in the foreground.
