About this work
A watercolor drawing shows a rough sea crowded with sailing ships, one large vessel in the center firing a cannon amid billowing smoke. In the foreground a dark sailing boat heels over in the waves while a rowing boat with oarsmen sits at left, and a town with towers lies on the distant shore. The work is attributed to Leendert de Koningh and is held by the Städel Museum.
