About this work

A black chalk drawing on tinted paper shows a dense herd of cattle and sheep moving across rugged, rocky ground, with horned oxen at the center and woolly sheep crowding the foreground. The sketchy, loosely hatched strokes suggest a rapid study of animals and landscape. The work is by Jean-Baptiste Huet, dated 1771, and held by the Städel Museum.
