About this work

A lively village square is shown with a crowd gathered around a cockerel mounted on a pole, a traditional rooster-shooting or hanging custom. A violinist and a cellist play at left while men in blue and green coats and women in white aprons watch, and onlookers lean from the arcaded timber building at right. The work is titled Hahnenschlag in der Umgebung von Frankfurt am Main, by Anton Radl, and is held by the Städel Museum.
