About this work

This watercolor drawing by Adolf Schrödter, dated 1853, presents the Rhine wine allegory from the series Die vier Hauptgetränke. A bearded, wreathed figure enthroned on a green cloth holds a staff, while a child and a woman playing a harp rise above a large wine barrel marked Johannisberg. Knights, a jester, a lute player and small dwarfs surround the central figure within a gilded frame.
