About this work
A pencil and white chalk drawing on blue-gray paper shows a dense cluster of trees with spreading foliage and gnarled branches, rendered with fine hatching and highlights. A handwritten inscription with a date appears in the lower part of the sheet. The drawing is attributed to Ernst Fries and dated 1824, and is held by the Städel Museum.
