About this work
A pencil drawing divided into two views: an upper panoramic landscape with a tower, a small domed building and a distant bridge-like structure, and a lower view of a vaulted grotto overgrown with trees beside a road, with a crenellated tomb on the right. The sketch is dated 1826 and was made by Ernst Fries; it is held by the Städel Museum.
