A pencil drawing shows a woman in medieval dress kneeling before a statue of the Mater Dolorosa, with a sword piercing her heart, set on a pedestal beside a vase of flowers. Behind her a cloister courtyard with pointed Gothic arches, a stork perched at a well, and a robed figure in the arcade recede into the background. The work is a drawing by Peter von Cornelius, dated 1811, held by the Städel Museum.
