About this work

This pen and ink drawing shows a horseman in a feathered cap pointing toward a gallows with a skeletal figure hanging from a wheel, while a cloaked companion rides beside him on a galloping horse. Winged apparitions and ghostly figures drift through the sky and the scene beyond a brick wall, and the foreground is filled with thistle and grasses. The work is catalogued in the Städel Museum as Die Erscheinung am Rabenstein by Peter von Cornelius, dated 1811.
