About this work
A pen and brown wash drawing with white heightening shows the dead Christ supported across the ground by a grieving woman in a veil and a young man, while a mourning figure on the left looks upward. A small winged angel kneels at the feet beside a crown of thorns and a titulus reading INRI-like lettering, set against a rough stone wall. Johann Erdmann Gottlieb Prestel dated this Beweinung Christi drawing 1774, held by the Städel Museum.
