About this work

This watercolor drawing shows two riders on horseback moving through a dense forest, with a reddish-brown horse in the foreground and a second rider and horse partly visible behind it. Loose, overlapping strokes of blue, violet, green, and yellow build the trees, foliage, and ground, dissolving the forms into color. The work is titled "Reiter im Walde" and dated 1913, attributed to August Macke, held by the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
