About this work

Two pencil studies of figures appear on a pale sheet: a standing man seen from behind with one arm raised, and a reclining figure with an arm lifted above. The sketches are loose, with shading applied in areas of the clothing. This drawing by Willem Witsen, dated 1870, is catalogued in the Rijksmuseum as preparatory studies for De Molenaar.
