About this work

This etching titled Millbank by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, dated 1861, shows a riverside view with a wooden embankment and pilings receding toward a row of factories and buildings along the far bank. Two men stand on the foreground quay beside a moored boat, while a seated figure and small rowing boat appear on the water. The inscription in the lower margin refers to a London publisher's display of Whistler's etchings and dry points.
